Contrary to common belief, sleep is not for wimps but for high achievers who stay younger and fitter for longer:

Our bodies all function according to a circadian rythmn which has been established for thousands of years and dictates that we get our deepest, most restorative sleep before midnight. The reason not to snack on carb-rich desserts before bed is that sugar and grains raise blood insulin levels, and as there is an inverse relationship between blood levels of Insulin and of growth hormone: when one is elevated, the other will automatically be low. We need growth hormone to rebuild muscle and repair organs while we sleep - and the greatest amount of growth hormone (about 75%) is released within an hour of first first falling asleep - so keep the sweet snacks for breakfast and stick to a plain camomile tea or a piece of cheese with a few nuts at night.

3) Last but certainly not least, unplug your Wifi router and fully switch off all mobile phones before going to bed. Just like our body resonates to the beat of dance music, our brain rythmns resonate with the electromagnetic frequencies around them - and wireless frequencies prevent deep sleep. 7 Benefits of High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

One of the biggest advantages of HIIT is that you can get maximal health benefits in minimal time.

HIIT involves short bursts of intense exercise alternated with low-intensity recovery periods. Interestingly, it is perhaps the most time-efficient way to exercise

Typically, a HIIT workout will range from 7 to 30 minutes in duration.

Despite how short the workout is, it can produce health benefits similar to twice as much moderate-intensity exercise

The actual activity being performed varies but can include sprinting, biking, jump rope or other body weight exercises.

For example, a HIIT workout using a stationary exercise bike could consist of 30 seconds of cycling as fast as possible against high resistance, followed by several minutes of slow, easy cycling with low resistance.

Regardless of how it is implemented, high-intensity intervals should involve short periods of vigorous exercise that make your heart rate speed up

Not only does HIIT provide the benefits of longer-duration exercise in a much shorter amount of time — it may also provide some unique health benefits

You can burn calories quickly using HIIT (9Trusted Source, 10Trusted Source).

One study compared the calories burned during 30 minutes each of HIIT, weight training, running and biking.

The researchers found that HIIT burned 25–30% more calories than the other forms of exercise (9Trusted Source).

One review looked at 13 experiments and 424 overweight and obese adults.

Interestingly, it found that both HIIT and traditional moderate-intensity exercise can reduce body fat and waist circumference (15Trusted Source).

Some research in active individuals has failed to show higher muscle mass after HIIT programs (25Trusted Source).

Weight training continues to be the "gold standard" form of exercise to increase muscle mass, but high-intensity intervals could support a small amount of muscle growth (24Trusted Source, 26Trusted Source).

Summary: If you are not very active, you may gain some muscle by starting HIIT but not as much as if you performed weight training.

Oxygen consumption refers to your muscles' ability to use oxygen, and endurance training is typically used to improve your oxygen consumption.

Traditionally, this consists of long sessions of continuous running or cycling at a steady rate.

However, it appears that HIIT can produce the same benefits in a shorter amount of time (20, 21Trusted Source, 27Trusted Source).

Summary: High-intensity interval training can improve oxygen consumption as much as traditional endurance training, even if you only exercise about half as long.

HIIT may have important health benefits, as well.

A large amount of research indicates that it can reduce heart rate and blood pressure in overweight and obese individuals, who often have high blood pressure (20).

One study found that eight weeks of HIIT on a stationary bike decreased blood pressure as much as traditional continuous endurance training in adults with high blood pressure (7Trusted Source).

In this study, the endurance training group exercised four days per week for 30 minutes per day, but the HIIT group only exercised three times per week for 20 minutes per day.

Some researchers have found that HIIT may even reduce blood pressure more than the frequently recommended moderate-intensity exercise (29Trusted Source).

However, it appears that high-intensity exercise does not typically change blood pressure in normal-weight individuals with normal blood pressure (20).

Summary: HIIT can reduce blood pressure and heart rate, primarily in overweight or obese individuals with high blood pressure.

Blood sugar can be reduced by HIIT programs lasting less than 12 weeks (20, 30Trusted Source).

A summary of 50 different studies found that not only does HIIT reduce blood sugar, but it also improves insulin resistance more than traditional continuous exercise (31Trusted Source).

Based on this information, it is possible that high-intensity exercise is particularly beneficial for those at risk for type 2 diabetes.

In fact, some experiments specifically in individuals with type 2 diabetes have demonstrated the effectiveness of HIIT for improving blood sugar (32Trusted Source).

The study authors concluded,

"Our findings suggest that curcumin plays a dual modulatory role in inhibition of adipogenesis as well as induction of the brown fat-like phenotype and thus may have potential therapeutic implications for treatment of obesity."

Summer time means it's time to tone up those arms that are now bared for the world to see! To stop the jiggle and bring on the tone we turned to one of the fitness industry’s top arm experts, Chris Freitag. Here is his upper arm workout: Enjoy!

"Through my years of being in the fitness industry, the arm area (shoulders, triceps, and biceps) has really shown to be a hot spot of attention for women. Why do women tend to find their arms so "unbareable" in the first place? I think the answer lies in the fact that like our hips and thighs, the back of the upper arm is a spot where women typically store fat. (If you have ever been tested for body fat with calipers, you will notice that the back of the arms is a spot that they test)".

"Without healthy diet and exercise, the fat storage combined with flabby triceps muscles can leave you with the jiggly appearance most women loathe. The good news is that upper-arm exercises with hand weights can provide pretty quick gratification.

I have to say though that beyond looking good in whatever outfit you want to wear, having strong arms is empowering! If you regularly do upper body exercises, I guarantee you'll get a kick out of how much stronger and self-reliant you'll feel…instead of asking for help with those stubborn jars, you'll be able to open them yourself…garbage bags and laundry baskets will feel lighter…picking up your toddlers or grandchildren will feel better!

If you start today and are consistent, you can start to feel stronger and look sleeker in 4 to 6 weeks. Here are a few exercises to get you started…

*For all four moves below, choose hand weights that are heavy enough to fatigue somewhere between 12-15 repetitions. If you can do 15 reps and feel like it is easy, try something a little heavier…but don't overdo it either!)

Front Shoulder Raise: Stand with your feet hip-width apart, holding weights down in front of your thighs, palms facing you. Keeping your elbows slightly bent, raise your arms up in front of you until they are parallel to the floor. Don't shrug—keep shoulders relaxed and don't raise your arms above shoulder level. Lower back to starting position.

Lateral Shoulder Raise: Standing with your feet hip-width apart, hold weights at your sides this time, palms facing each other. Keeping elbows slightly bent, raise arms straight out to the sides until they are parallel to the floor. Again do not go higher than your shoulder level. Lower back to starting position.
Bicep Curl: This is a classic. With feet hip to shoulder width apart and knees bent slightly, hold a weight in each hand with your arms down by your sides, palms facing forward. Bend your elbows to lift the weights toward your shoulders, stopping when they are at chest height, palms facing your body. Slowly lower back to the starting position.

Triceps Overhead Press: Stand with feet hip-width apart (or sit in a chair). Clasp one weight with both hands. Extend your arms straight overhead, elbows close to your ears. Bend your elbows to slowly lower the weight behind you. Keep your elbows close to your ears. Contract your triceps and straighten your elbows to return to the starting position.

Body weight exercises can also be very effective:
Push Ups: Stretch out on the mat or floor, or if you are a beginner, start on your knees instead of your toes. Keep your hands under your shoulders and a little wider than shoulder-width. Bend your elbows to a 90-degree angle and lower your body, keeping your abs tight. Don't sag in the low back – keep a neutral spine.
Tricep dips: Sit on a bench, with your hands next to your thighs. Lift your butt off the seat and move your body so it's slightly in front of the seat. Keep your knees slightly bent. Bend at the elbows and lower your body several inches. Keep your shoulders relaxed and elbows pointed back. Push back up to starting position".

The great news is that if people ate a daily apple instead of taking statin drugs to prevent heart attacks and strokes, there would not be any increase in these serious conditions. 
It turns out there are over 900 studies proving the harmful side-effects of statin drugs do not just stop there; hundreds of reports also illustrate how statin pharmacauticals make you far more susceptible to Anemia, Pneumonia, Cancer, Cataracts, Memory loss, Altsheimers, Liver disease and general inflammation and weakening of the immune system. Statins also deplete the body's CoEnzyme Q10 reserves - and as CoQ10 is essential for the production of energy, especially in the heart, statins can also (this would be funny if it were not so tragic) increase the risk of heart attacks.

2) Second, zinc helps produce the enzymes necessary for causing insulin to bind to cells so that glucose can enter and be used as fuel. The process of insulin binding to the cell is what is referred to as “insulin sensitivity” and means that the cell is receptive to insulin. Once insulin binds to the cell, it “opens the door” so that the glucose can enter. If a cell is resistant to insulin, glucose will stay in the blood stream, cause high blood sugar and ultimately fat gain. When zinc concentration falls, there is a reduction in insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity, which if persistent, will lead to diabetes.

3) Third, zinc has a super anti-inflammatory effect by helping remove inflammatory markers such as C-reactive proteins. As inflammation of cells reduces their ability to bind insulin, zinc helps maintain healthy insulin sensitivity.

What is zinc and where do we find it ?

Zinc is a natural mineral found in the food we eat. The best sources of zinc are meat and seafood, in particular oysters and mussels -such as the freeze-dried Green Lipped Mussels in deW SKINERGIE. How To Test your Zinc Levels

As you can also have too much of a good thing, and taking too much zinc can actually lower your immune levels, perform a zinc test starting to pop pills (NB you can only get too much from isolated zinc sulphate pills, never from whole-food supplements such as the green lipped mussel in deW SKINERGIE ). Once you start taking zinc, your levels will rise so you should do another test eight weeks later to ensure optimal levels over the longer term.

The simplest way to test for zinc is a taste test : Get a bottle of zinc sulfate, pour about one teaspoon into a cup and sip it, holding it in the mouth. If it tastes just like water, you are very zinc deficient. If it tastes slightly metallic, you are moderately zinc deficient. If it tastes very metallic and quite disgusting, your levels are probably adequate. This test is subject to individual taste perception and it is not 100 percent valid, but it is a good place to start.

There is a lot of controversy about the sun: should we love it or avoid it. Here is the lowdown:


Freshly applied sunscreen absorbs UVA & UVB rays, reducing the number of free radicals formed in the skin. Re-applying frequently is important, as UV filters that have been in the sun for several hours tend to decompose and turn into free radicals themselves. You can protect yourself from this by reapplying regularly and always using sunscreen rich in antioxidants.

By blocking UV rays, sunscreen also prevents Vitamin D from being synthesised in your skin. Regular use of sunscreen and always covering up in the sun are linked to Vitamin D deficiency.

The most natutral way to boost your Vitamin D levels is to expose bare (moisturized, but sunscreen-free) skin to the sun. Vitamin D is a super-important Vitamin that influences nearly 3,000 genes, powerfully supports hormonal function, boosts your immunity and literally halves your risk of catching a cold. According to a study on over 10,000 individuals, correcting a Vitamin D deficiency can cut your risk of dying in half.

Allowing your children to play in the sun without sunscreen (with, temperature permitting, as much of their face, arms and legs exposed as possible) strengthens their teeth: Researchers found that children with severe caries had significantly lower vitamin D levels than cavity-free children. Regular, moderate sun exposure has been shown in a global study to actually reduce your risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer: Outdoor workers who are regularly in the sun have far fewer cases of melanoma than people who work indoors – so slathering on sunscreen which interferes with Vitamin D synthesis every time you are in the sun could inadvertently actually increase your melanoma risk.
Good levels of Vitamin D are crucial for pregnant women and their babies, lowering the risk of premature birth, low birth weight and C-section. Enough Vitamin D in a mother also boosts her baby’s immunity. Sadly, 80 percent of pregnant women worldwide have inadequate vitamin D levels.

So how do we optimize our Vitamin D levels?

Get some sun between 10am and 2pm when UVB rays are strongest: this is the best and safest time. During this time you need the shortest exposure time to produce Vitamin D because the (Vitamin D synthesising) UVB rays are most intense when the sun is high. When the sun goes down toward the horizon, UVB is filtered out much more than the dangerous UVA. 
In terms of length of exposure, you only need enough sun to have your skin turn the lightest shade of pink. Once you reach this point your body will not produce any more Vitamin D in this sun ‘session’ and any additional sun exposure will simply cause harm and damage to your skin. The ideal time in the sun may therefore only be a few minutes if you have very pale skin. Such ‘therapeutic’ doses of sunshine also stimulate collagen synthesis & cellular renewal and can help heal skin conditions such as acne, eczema and psoriasis. The darker your skin, the more time in the sun you need to optimize your vitamin D production.

According to new research, an apple a day is not just great for our beauty, it really does keep the doctor away.

The study participants made no other dietary or lifestyle changes and their mortality rates from heart attacks and strokes were recorded.

The results of the study were published in BMJ. Scientists found that eating an apple a day or taking statin drugs daily resulted in an equivalent reduction of mortality, however the Scientists also found that prescribing statin drugs to everyone over the age of fifty would result in at least 1200 additional cases of (totally avoidable) short sightedness, 200 additional cases of rhabdomyolysis (dangerous muscular degeneration), and 12,300 additional cases of diabetes p/a. The great news is that if people ate a daily apple instead of taking statin drugs to prevent heart attacks and strokes, there would not be any increase in these serious conditions. 

It turns out there are over 900 studies proving the harmful side-effects of statin drugs do not just stop there; hundreds of reports also illustrate how statin pharmacauticals make you far more susceptible to Anemia, Pneumonia, Cancer, Cataracts, Memory loss, Altsheimers, Liver disease and general inflammation and weakening of the immune system. Statins also deplete the body's CoEnzyme Q10 reserves - and as CoQ10 is essential for the production of energy, especially in the heart, statins can also (this would be funny if it were not so tragic) increase the risk of heart attacks.

Apples on the other hand have ONLY really positive effects on our health, they help boost our overall immunity, protect against diabetes, support our digestive health and protect our heart.

So you think replacing sugar with artificial sweetner will help you lose weight? Sounds compelling, but long-term research confirms that the opposite is true :

Artificial sweetners may actually increase the likelihood of weight gain. The American Diabetes Association has presented a study on 474 participants that found a correlation between drinking diet soda and a wider waistline[ii]. At the end of the 10 year study, the results showed that diet soda drinkers had a whoppingly 70 percent greater waist circumference than those who avoided artificially sweetened sodas. Drinking two or more diet sodas a day could give you a waistline 500 percent greater than those who steer clear of artificially sweetened drinks.

...But replacing sugar with artificial sweetner is a healthy choice (?)

Not at all! A 2012 study among 2,500 men also concluded that those who drank diet drinks every day had a massive 43 % increase in cardiovascular events, (ie strokes and heart attacks). In fact, regular consumption of products sweetened with Aspartame and Sucralose actually increases your risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke – shockingly this increased risk holds true even if you are of normal weight ! 

Another  2011 study on 3,000 women also found that drinking 2 or more diet sodas a day led to a 30 percent decline in kidney function[i].

Yet another study at the university of Texas suggested that heavy aspartame exposure might directly contribute to increased blood glucose levels, which would help explain the association observed between diet soda consumption and the increased risk of diabetes. Artificial sweeteners trick your brain into thinking it is consuming sugar, but when your body realizes it is not getting what it expects, it tends to become confused, so when you consume real sugar, your body may not react with a suitable insulin response. A 2008 study found that drinking just one diet cola a day was associated with 36% greater risk of developing metabolic syndrome (ie diabetes, cardiovascular disease and/or cancer) [iii] .

Lastly, instead of satisfying your appetite, artificial sweeteners may actually make you crave more dessert. As artificial sweeteners taste up to 600 times sweeter than sugar, they may increase appetite and may also make you crave other sweet products and make less-sweet foods like fruits and vegetables less appealing.

Q: what is more scary, JAWS the movie or swimsuit season?

A: swimsuit season (obviously)

I do not know about you, but I always feel totally self-conscious when putting on my swimsuit for the first time and heading for the beach. Bikini season is scary at the best of times, but there are so many svelte, toned, delicate beauties on the beaches of the Côte d'Azur that you literally want to give up! As for the rest of us; big smiles and sit-ups can work wonders, and a few weeks of crunches & leg curls, brisk morning walks (get out there first thing in the morning before you can change your mind ;) ) early nights and a diet focused around green, leafy and non starchy vegetables, poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, fruits, nuts, lots of beautifully fresh water… and a little less sugar & carbs…. and you Will look Gorgeous on the beach!
